When a Narrative becomes a Game Mode

Adapting or recreating a form of media within a game space is a common way of finding new ways of playing that game, one such example is implementing the Hunger Games style of player vs player in the Minecraft game world. This merging of different forms of media comes with some predefined set of rules and expectations that a player would associate with the words Hunger Games. Many will assume that it will have a Cornucopia with weapons and supplies and proceed to attack other each other during the flow of the game until the last player remains. This is due to the predefined formula of Hunger Games, you expect that everyone will see each other as an enemy or even to form alliances and team up with other players. However this is only one facet of Hunger Games, within the game world of Minecraft “The Hunger Games” as a narrative changes into a commonly used game mode in online servers. The narrative structure that originally forced the tributes to participate in the battle royal is non existence in the Minecraft version. Whenever you adapt one form of media into another you will evidently lose something from one form to the next, “lost in translation” comes to mind in this case. What interested people the most was the battle royal aspect and not the narrative aspect. Though many do not really care or take notice about any of that really, but with the rising popularity of the game mode and the vast number maps online, servers then have a need to innovate and see what they change to the formula to differentiate themselves, to show the players that they have the better map.

So what should we implement when making our map to diverge from the standard formula of Hunger Games as game mode? Well if anything I would like to re-implement a narrative structure and see what the players make of it. It does not need to be anything too fancy or in-depth but as an experiment it be a good way to see how players react within the narrative. This is to give the players a reason to be invested the game they are playing, a reason to why you are placed in this arena with weapons, because without it the game mode is really just a normal player vs player using the name and style of Hunger Games. I say give the players a backdrop to why they are being placed in a life or death situation and see how what happens next. Of course the narrative is only one part of making a game but an important one, without it the game is only really played for a personal reason such as getting a high score or being number 1. By adding a narrative is creates another layer to the game mode and it gives the players even more ways to interact with the game world.
